drive through gate

Driving to LA from San Francisco, my family always makes it a point to drop by Harry’s Ranch. It is a restaurant that offers some of the finest steaks in the world. The best steak I ate was when I was in Japan, Second was in Chicago and third was Harry’s Ranch. I’m not exactly sure where it is on the interstate but you’ll know you are near because you can smell it. You won’t smell the aroma of fine steak; instead you’ll smell the aroma of cows and cow’s dung. Harry’s Ranch the restaurant is also home to Harry’s Ranch (a real cattle ranch). I don’t know how many cattle they have but it looks like a gazillion heads to me. The first time I visited the place was also the first time I’ve seen a drive through gate.

A drive through gate is a gate that holds livestock in check. The one I saw had a fiberglass arm (like a fishing rod) with electric cables running down it. The arm can swing in any direction. The electric cables won’t harm the cars but will send harmless shocks to livestock to keep it in place. According to the people working the ranch, it eliminates the need for expensive cattle guards.
