The Encarta Dictionary gives three meanings to the word cantilever. It is “projection supported at one end”, “supporting bracket” or “wing with no external brace”. It is a word that is commonly used in architecture to describe parts of a building. When we talk of cantilevered patio umbrella, we are talking of an outside umbrella used for shading that is connected to a single freestanding pole from one side. There are variations in design but the common denominator is a rod rising from one base attached to an umbrella.

Cantilevered umbrellas are useful in shading the patio or poolside. Most are big enough to cover several chairs and a small table. They come in various shapes that include squares, rounds, hexagonal and octagonal shapes. Another variation is one where the rod is attached to the center of a table. This design provides ample shade but takes up table space which can be impractical.
