Plants thrive on nutrients that it gets from the soil. A healthy soil has all the nutrients that plants need. They need nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and less important nutrients such as magnesium, calcium, sulfur and others. Aside from nutrients the healthy soil also needs to have the proper pH. This is the measure of the acidity or alkalinity of the soil.

For those planning to start an organic garden, the first step is to submit to organic soil testing. A soil test will show the characteristics of the soil. It will help decide on the kinds of plants that will grow in it. By knowing the composition of the soil, adjustments can also be made to make it perfect for the plants that you intend to grow.
