Methods of Growing Plants The Hydroponic Way

Hydroponic is the process of growing plants without the use of soil. The idea is to supply the plants with enough nutrients without letting it pass through the soil. Hydroponics makes use of a controlled environment and enough nutrients to feed the plants. Certain factors such as light, temperature, CO2, oxygen and pH levels are applied in the right proportion. In this way they grow just as lush and healthy as plants grown in soil.

There are several ways that this can be achieved. The ‘deep water’ system is the purest form with the roots directly exposed to the nutrient solution. Another system is the Ebb and Flow or Flooding and Draining system. In this method the root system is soaked at specific intervals. In the wick feeding system the plants draw water with the help of a wick which runs from the base of the container to a bottle of nutrient feed solution. Hydroponic wick systems make use of the capillary action of the liquid as it travels up the plant through the wick.
