The hammock was invented out of a need by early sailors to accommodate more sleepers in limited spaces; and by jungle inhabitants who needed protection from crawling snakes and other animals. Today, they are used more for relaxation. There are many different kinds of hammock. A portable folding hammock will be practical to bring to a camping trip. Some are made specifically for backpacking.

The common hammock that we are familiar with is meant for relaxing at home. Supplied with fat ropes, they can be tied to a couple of tree trunks and they are ready to use. Other hammocks are self standing. They come with metal or wood structures that support the sling. Both types come in various materials that can range from a thick fabric, nylon or knotted hemp.
