solar energy systems

Solar power is the result of converting sunlight into electricity. The use of solar energy systems in the home is gaining popularity because of the advantages to the household and to the environment. In 2008 solar power supplied only 0.02% of the world’s total energy supply. But the potential is great. It is without doubt that the use of solar power will improve tremendously in the immediate years to come.

The increased use of solar energy is being helped by the efforts on many competing technologies, including fourteen types of photovoltaic cells such as thin film, monocrystalline silicon, polycrystalline silicon, and amorphous cells, as well as multiple types of concentrating solar power. It is too early to know which technology will become dominant. What is important is that as of the present, the learning curve about this technology has helped to bring the costs down. This is good, because the high cost of setting up a solar system at home is one of its limiting factors. Let us hope that with increased awareness and lowering of the cost of setting up a solar power system the time is near when we will be using free energy from the sun.
